Besides using the microwave to soften the skin in preparation for oven baking, you can completely bake the acorn squash by cooking in the microwave for about 13 minutes.
Small acorn squash, like spaghetti squash, can be cooked whole. Pierce the squash which prevents the skin/shell from bursting during baking. Put the squash in a baking dish and bake for 1 1/2 to 2 hours at 325 degrees. Test for doneness by squeezing the shell - when it gives a bit with pressure, the squash is ready.
